The oral diseases, caries and periodontitis are endemic diseases. Limited resources are devoted to the evaluation, development and improvement of existing treatment strategies for these diseases. A national quality registry, SKaPa, is under construction since 2006.

The purpose of the registry is to improve and develop the quality of care and treatment results for the dental diseases caries and periodontitis, in regard to prevention and disease management as well as restorative/operative approaches. The registry shall also contribute to development work in dental practices and to support further advancement of national guidelines.

The registry is based on a data warehouse to which data from patient records are automatically retrieved. Information in the registry includes basic data on both patient and caregiver, such as sex, demographics and professions, as well as care-bound data on examination, diagnoses and treatment of caries and periodontitis. Other odontological information that may be related to caries and periodontitis are also recorded.

In the long term it is calculated that a large number of Swedish dental clinics are going to join the registry.

Feedback will be given by monthly reports and an annual summary. Analyses will be performed with the intention of finding relevant links between the disease and treatment data, organization, etc. by analysing process and performance parameters. The registry is expected also to provide a basis for future research.

Further information about SKaPa is available on the website, www.skapareg.se.
