Newborn eye-examination is aimed at detecting severe diseases early enough for treatment to be effective. The guidelines for eye-screening in the newborn are described in the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare Guidelines 1991. There is a discrepancy between recommendations and observance of guidelines in Sweden, which represents a problem. To date, there is no consensus reached regarding routines for newborn eye-examinations. A joint guideline is needed to determine whether eye-examinations should be an obligatory part of the newborn examination in the maternity ward or not.

Despite the fact that management of paediatric cataracts in Sweden has improved dramatically over the past two decades, far from all children achieve normal visual function. The causes of this need to be defined. Young age at surgery is an important determinant for satisfying visual outcome. Unfortunately, it is also a factor causing postoperative complications preventing optimal visual development

The aim of this register is to evaluate and optimize newborn eye-screening strategies for early detection of paediatric cataracts. It also aims at improving management of the disease through evaluation of surgical outcome to age at intervention and severity of visual deprivation among other parameters, in order to optimize the timing of the intervention and surgical techniques and routines.

The goals are:

  • to be a total registry for all paediatric cataract surgery in Sweden
  • to be a national base for quality assurance
  • to analyze unexpected outcomes
