The Swedish National Cataract Register (NCR) was instituted in January 1992.
The purpose and long-term goal with the NCR is to be a national base for quality assurance in participating units and to stimulate to quality improvement. Other goals are
-
to be a total registry for all cataract surgery performed in Sweden
-
to analyse unusual outcomes
-
to document the results of routine health care.
The NCR consists of a base registry with data on demography, waiting time, and preoperative visual acuity. Since 1994 data is collected concerning the surgical outcome (visual acuity, difference between target and final refraction, surgically induced astigmatism). Since 1995 patients’ self-assessed visual disabilities and benefit of surgery are registered. In 1998 also post-operative endophthalmitis was included in the list of variables to be collected.
Every surgical unit performing cataract surgery (private and community-run) participates in the NCR. During the years since start almost all cataract surgeries performed in Sweden has been reported to the NCR (94% in the beginning, now 98,5%).
Originally every cataract extraction was reported using one unique form per operation. During the last years some units have reported their data using e-mail. Another possibility is reporting via the Web.
The feed-back to participating units has been accomplished by quarterly reports, a users’ meeting and an annual report with analysed data. The NCR has produced over 30 articles published in international peer-review journals.
